Guerlain stands tall amongst the world's oldest and most distinguished fragrances designers. Founded in France in 1828 by Pierre-François Guerlain, it had humble beginnings as a single Parisian store. Yet Pierre artfully created custom fragrances as the company's first master perfumer, and before long, the once-modest business had dominated the French fashion scene.
By the 1850s Guerlain had built an impressive roster of patrons from high society and royalty. In 1853, Pierre authored the classic cologne, Eau de Cologne Impériale, which was presented as a gift for Empress Eugénie, the wife of Napoleon III of France.
As a family business, the role of master perfumer fell to the descendants of Pierre-François. In the early 1900s, Jacques Guerlain, third master perfumer of Guerlain, produced many of Guerlain's most important creations. One such fragrance was Après L'Ondée, or "After the Rainshower," a scent reminiscent of the joys of a walk through a rural landscape, or a floral garden after a rainstorm.
